11 And the birds of prey came down on the carcasses, but Abram drove them away. 12 And it happened, as the sun went down,[a] then a deep sleep fell upon Abram and, behold, a great terrifying darkness fell upon him. 13 And he said to Abram, “You must surely know[b] that your descendants shall be as aliens in a land not their own.[c] And they shall serve them[d] and they[e] shall oppress them four hundred years.

11 Then birds of prey came down on the carcasses,(A) but Abram drove them away.
12 As the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep,(B) and a thick and dreadful darkness came over him. 13 Then the Lord said to him, “Know for certain that for four hundred years(C) your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own and that they will be enslaved(D) and mistreated there.
