20 Make Sabbath days special to show that you belong to me. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God.’

21 But their children also turned against me. They were not careful to obey my laws and my commands. (But anyone who obeyed them would enjoy a good life.) They did not obey my rules about Sabbath days. So I was very angry with them. I was ready to destroy them there in the wilderness. 22 But I did not want the people of other nations to insult my name. They had seen me bring Israel's people out of Egypt. So I could not destroy my people.

20 Keep my Sabbaths(A) holy, that they may be a sign(B) between us. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God.(C)

21 “‘But the children rebelled against me: They did not follow my decrees, they were not careful to keep my laws,(D) of which I said, “The person who obeys them will live by them,” and they desecrated my Sabbaths. So I said I would pour out my wrath on them and spend my anger(E) against them in the wilderness.(F) 22 But I withheld(G) my hand, and for the sake of my name(H) I did what would keep it from being profaned in the eyes of the nations in whose sight I had brought them out.
