²² “If a man is discovered having sexual relations with another man’s wife, both the man who had sex with the woman and the woman must die. You must purge the evil from Israel.

¹⁶ The Lord said to Moses, “You are about to rest with your ancestors,^(A) and these people will soon prostitute themselves with the foreign gods^(B) of the land they are entering. They will abandon me^(C) and break the covenant^(D) I have made with them.

⁵ “I will come to you in judgment, and I will be ready to witness against sorcerers and adulterers; against those who swear falsely; against those who oppress the hired worker, the widow, and the fatherless; and against those who deny justice to the resident alien.^(A) They do not fear me,”^(B) says the Lord of Armies.

Adultery Begins in the Heart

²⁷ “You have heard that it was said, Do not commit adultery.^{[a](A) 28} But I tell you, everyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.^(B)

³² But I tell you, everyone who divorces his wife, except in a case of sexual immorality, causes her to commit adultery. And whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.^(A)

⁹ I tell you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another commits adultery.”^[a](A)

¹⁸ “Which ones?” he asked him.

Jesus answered: Do not murder; do not commit adultery; do not steal; do not bear false witness;^(A)
