25 Eleazar, Aaron’s son, married one of Putiel’s daughters, who bore him Phinehas.[a] These are the heads of the ancestral houses of the Levites by their clans.

- 6:25 Phinehas: according to Nm 25:13, Phinehas was given by God “the covenant of an everlasting priesthood” because of his zeal for God when the Israelites committed apostasy by worshiping the Baal of Peor in the plains of Moab (see Nm 25:1–18).

New International Version
25 Eleazar son of Aaron married one of the daughters of Putiel, and she bore him Phinehas.(A)
These were the heads of the Levite families, clan by clan.

23 Phinehas too, the son of Eleazar,
was the courageous third of his line
When, zealous for the God of all,
he met the crisis of his people(A)
And, at the prompting of his noble heart,
atoned for the children of Israel.
24 Therefore, on him also God conferred the right,
in a covenant of friendship, to provide for the sanctuary,
So that he and his descendants
should possess the high priesthood forever.
