7 He named that place Massah [Testing] and Meribah [Complaining] because the Israelites complained and because they tested Yahweh, asking, “Is Yahweh with us or not?”
God Defeats the Amalekites
8 The Amalekites fought Israel at Rephidim. 9 Moses said to Joshua, “Choose some of our men. Then fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill. I will hold in my hand the staff Elohim told me to take along.”

New International Version
7 And he called the place Massah[a](A) and Meribah[b](B) because the Israelites quarreled and because they tested the Lord saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”
The Amalekites Defeated
8 The Amalekites(C) came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim.(D) 9 Moses said to Joshua,(E) “Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff(F) of God in my hands.”
