7 He named the place Massah[a] and Meribah,[b] because the Israelites quarreled, and because they tested the Lord by saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”
Battle With the Amalekites
8 Then the Amalekites came and fought against the Israelites at Rephidim. 9 Moses said to Joshua, “Select some men for us, and go out and fight against the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on the hilltop, and God’s staff will be in my hand.”

Exodus 17:7-9
New International Version
7 And he called the place Massah[a](A) and Meribah[b](B) because the Israelites quarreled and because they tested the Lord saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”
The Amalekites Defeated
8 The Amalekites(C) came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim.(D) 9 Moses said to Joshua,(E) “Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff(F) of God in my hands.”
