6 I will stand there in front of you by the rock at Mount Horeb. Hit the rock. Then water will come out of it for the people to drink.” So Moses hit the rock while the elders of Israel watched. 7 Moses called the place Massah and Meribah. That’s because the people of Israel argued with him there. They also tested the Lord. They asked, “Is the Lord among us or not?”

New International Version
6 I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb.(A) Strike(B) the rock, and water(C) will come out of it for the people to drink.” So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7 And he called the place Massah[a](D) and Meribah[b](E) because the Israelites quarreled and because they tested the Lord saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”
