“Oh, that we were back in Egypt,” they moaned, “and that the Lord had killed us there! For there we had plenty to eat. But now you have brought us into this wilderness to kill us with starvation.”

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Look, I’m going to rain down food from heaven for them. Everyone can go out each day and gather as much food as he needs. And I will test them in this, to see whether they will follow my instructions or not. Tell them to gather twice as much as usual on the sixth day of each week.”

The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the Lord’s hand in Egypt!(A) There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food(B) we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death.”(C)

Then the Lord said to Moses, “I will rain down bread from heaven(D) for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test(E) them and see whether they will follow my instructions. On the sixth day they are to prepare what they bring in, and that is to be twice(F) as much as they gather on the other days.”
