19 Moses took the bones of Joseph with him, because Joseph had made the Israelites solemnly swear to do this. Joseph had said, “Elohim will definitely come to help you. When he does, take my bones with you.”
20 They moved from Succoth and camped at Etham, on the edge of the desert. 21 By day Yahweh went ahead of them in a column of smoke to lead them on their way. By night he went ahead of them in a column of fire to give them light so that they could travel by day or by night.

New International Version
19 Moses took the bones of Joseph(A) with him because Joseph had made the Israelites swear an oath. He had said, “God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones up with you from this place.”[a](B)
20 After leaving Sukkoth(C) they camped at Etham on the edge of the desert.(D) 21 By day the Lord went ahead(E) of them in a pillar of cloud(F) to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night.
