Curses for Disobedience

¹⁵“But ^(A)if you will not obey the voice of the Lord your God or be careful to do all his commandments and his statutes that I command you today, then all these curses shall come upon you and ^(B)overtake you. ¹⁶Cursed shall you be ^(C)in the city, and cursed shall you be in the field. ¹⁷Cursed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl. ¹⁸Cursed shall be the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground, the increase of your herds and the young of your flock. ¹⁹Cursed shall you be when you come in, and cursed shall you be when you go out.

²⁰“The Lord ^(D)will send on you curses, confusion, and ^(E)frustration in all that you undertake to do, ^(F)until you are destroyed and perish quickly on account of the evil of your deeds, because you have forsaken me. ²¹The Lord will make ^(G)the pestilence stick to you until he has consumed you off the land that you are entering to take possession of it. ²²^(H)The Lord will strike you with wasting disease and with fever, inflammation and fiery heat, and with drought^[a] and with ^(I)blight and with mildew. They shall pursue you until you perish. ²³And ^(J)the heavens over your head shall be bronze, and the earth under you shall be iron. ²⁴The Lord will make the rain of your land powder. From heaven dust shall come down on you until you are destroyed.

²⁵^(K)“The Lord will cause you to be defeated before your enemies. You shall go out one way against them and flee seven ways before them. And you ^(L)shall be a horror to all the kingdoms of the earth. ²⁶And ^(M)your dead body shall be food for all birds of the air and for the beasts of the earth, and ^(N)there shall be no one to frighten them away. ²⁷The Lord will strike you ^(O)with the boils of Egypt, and with tumors and ^(P)scabs and itch, of which you cannot be healed. ²⁸The Lord will strike you with ^(Q)madness and blindness and confusion of mind, ²⁹and you shall ^(R)grope at noonday, as the blind grope in darkness, and you shall not prosper in your ways.^[b] And you shall be only oppressed and robbed continually, and there shall be no one to help you. ³⁰^(S)You shall betroth a wife, but another man shall ravish her. ^(T)You shall build a house, but you shall not dwell in it. ^(U)You shall plant a vineyard, but you shall not enjoy its fruit. ³¹Your ox shall be slaughtered before your eyes, but you shall not eat any of it. Your donkey shall be seized before your face, but shall not be restored to you. Your sheep shall be given to your enemies, but there shall be no one to help you. ³²^(V)Your sons and your daughters shall be given to another people, while your eyes look on and fail with longing for them all day long, ^(W)but you shall be helpless. ³³A nation that you have not known shall eat up the fruit of your ground and of all your labors, and you shall be only oppressed and crushed continually, ³⁴so that you are driven mad ^(X)by the sights that your eyes see. ³⁵The Lord will strike you on the knees and on the legs ^(Y)with grievous boils of which you cannot be healed, from the sole of your foot to the crown of your head.

³⁶“The Lord will ^(Z)bring you and your king whom you set over you to a nation that neither you ^(AA)nor your fathers have known. And ^(AB)there you shall serve other gods of wood and stone. ³⁷And you shall become ^(AC)a horror, a proverb, and a byword among all the peoples where the Lord will lead you away. ³⁸^(AD)You shall carry much seed into the field and shall gather in little, for ^(AE)the locust shall consume it. ³⁹^(AF)You shall plant vineyards and dress them, but you shall neither drink of the wine nor gather the grapes, for the worm shall eat them. ⁴⁰You shall have olive trees throughout all your territory, but you ^(AG)shall not anoint yourself with the oil, for your olives shall drop off. ⁴¹You shall father sons and daughters, but they shall not be yours, for ^(AH)they shall go into captivity. ⁴²^(AI)The cricket^[c] shall possess all your trees and the fruit of your ground. ⁴³^(AJ)The sojourner who is among you shall rise higher and higher above you, and you shall come down lower and lower. ⁴⁴^(AK)He shall lend to you, and you shall not lend to him. ^(AL)He shall be the head, and you shall be the tail.

⁴⁵^(AM)“All these curses shall come upon you and pursue you and overtake you till you are destroyed, because you did not obey the voice of the Lord your God, to keep his commandments and his statutes that he commanded you. ⁴⁶They shall be ^(AN)a sign and a wonder against you and your offspring forever. ⁴⁷^(AO)Because you did not serve the Lord your God with joyfulness and gladness of heart, because of the abundance of all things, ⁴⁸therefore you shall serve your enemies whom the Lord will send against you, in hunger and thirst, in nakedness, and lacking everything. And he ^(AP)will put a yoke of iron on your neck until he has destroyed you. ⁴⁹^(AQ)The Lord will bring a nation against you from far away, from the end of the earth, ^(AR)swooping down like the eagle, a nation ^(AS)whose language you do not understand, ⁵⁰a hard-faced nation ^(AT)who shall not respect the old or show mercy to the young. ⁵¹It shall ^(AU)eat the offspring of your cattle and the fruit of your ground, until you are destroyed; it also shall not leave you grain, wine, or oil, the increase of your herds or the young of your flock, until they have caused you to perish.

⁵²“They shall ^(AV)besiege you in all your towns, until your high and fortified walls, in which you trusted, come down throughout all your land. And they shall besiege you in all your towns throughout all your land, which the Lord your God has given you. ⁵³And ^(AW)you shall eat the fruit of your womb, the flesh of your sons and daughters, whom the Lord your God has given you, ^(AX)in the siege and in the distress with which your enemies shall distress you. ⁵⁴The man who is the most tender and refined among you will ^(AY)begrudge food to his brother, to ^(AZ)the wife he embraces,^[d] and to the last of the children whom he has left, ⁵⁵so that he will not give to any of them any of the flesh of his children whom he is eating, because he has nothing else left, ^(BA)in the siege and in the distress with which your enemy shall distress you in all your towns. ⁵⁶^(BB)The most tender and refined woman among you, who would not venture to set the sole of her foot on the ground because she is so delicate and tender, will begrudge to the husband she embraces,^[e] to her son and to her daughter, ⁵⁷her afterbirth that comes out from between her feet and her children whom she bears, because lacking everything she will eat them secretly, ^(BC)in the siege and in the distress with which your enemy shall distress you in your towns.

⁵⁸“If you are not careful to do all the words of this law that are written in this book, that you may fear this glorious and awesome name, ^(BD)the Lord your God, ⁵⁹then the Lord will bring on you and your offspring extraordinary afflictions, afflictions severe and lasting, and sicknesses grievous and lasting. ⁶⁰And he will bring upon you again all ^(BE)the diseases of Egypt, of which you were afraid, and they shall cling to you. ⁶¹Every sickness also and every affliction that is not recorded in the book of this law, the Lord will bring upon you, until you are destroyed. ⁶²Whereas ^(BF)you were as numerous ^(BG)as the stars of heaven, you shall be left few in number, because you did not obey the voice of the Lord your God. ⁶³And as the Lord ^(BH)took delight in doing you good and multiplying you, so the Lord will ^(BI)take delight in bringing ruin upon you and destroying you. And you shall be plucked off the land that you are entering to take possession of it.

⁶⁴“And the Lord ^(BJ)will scatter you among all peoples, from one end of the earth to the other, and ^(BK)there you shall serve other gods ^(BL)of wood and stone, ^(BM)which neither you nor your fathers have known. ⁶⁵And ^(BN)among these nations you shall find no respite, and there shall be no resting place for the sole of your foot, but ^(BO)the Lord will give you there a trembling heart and failing eyes and ^(BP)a languishing soul. ⁶⁶Your life shall hang in doubt before you. Night and day you shall be in dread and have no assurance of your life. ⁶⁷^(BQ)In the morning you shall say, ‘If only it were evening!’ and at evening you shall say, ‘If only it were morning!’ because of the dread that your heart shall feel, and ^(BR)the sights that your eyes shall see. ⁶⁸And the Lord ^(BS)will bring you back in ships to Egypt, a journey that I promised that ^(BT)you should never make again; and there you shall offer yourselves for sale to your enemies as male and female slaves, but there will be no buyer.”

¹⁵However, if you do not obey^(A) the Lord your God and do not carefully follow all his commands and decrees I am giving you today,^(B) all these curses will come on you and overtake you:^(C)

¹⁶You will be cursed in the city and cursed in the country.^(D)

¹⁷Your basket and your kneading trough will be cursed.^(E)

¹⁸The fruit of your womb will be cursed, and the crops of your land, and the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks.^(F)

¹⁹You will be cursed when you come in and cursed when you go out.^(G)

²⁰The Lord will send on you curses,^(H) confusion and rebuke^(I) in everything you put your hand to, until you are destroyed and come to sudden ruin^(J) because of the evil^(K) you have done in forsaking him.^[a] ²¹The Lord will plague you with diseases until he has destroyed you from the land you are entering to possess.^(L) ²²The Lord will strike you with wasting disease,^(M) with fever and inflammation, with scorching heat and drought,^(N) with blight^(O) and mildew, which will plague^(P) you until you perish.^(Q) ²³The sky over your head will be bronze, the ground beneath you iron.^(R) ²⁴The Lord will turn the rain^(S) of your country into dust and powder; it will come down from the skies until you are destroyed.

²⁵The Lord will cause you to be defeated^(T) before your enemies. You will come at them from one direction but flee from them in seven,^(U) and you will become a thing of horror^(V) to all the kingdoms on earth.^(W) ²⁶Your carcasses will be food for all the birds^(X) and the wild animals, and there will be no one to frighten them away.^(Y) ²⁷The Lord will afflict you with the boils of Egypt^(Z) and with tumors, festering sores and the itch, from which you cannot be cured. ²⁸The Lord will afflict you with madness, blindness and confusion of mind. ²⁹At midday you will grope^(AA) about like a blind person in the dark. You will be unsuccessful in everything you do; day after day you will be oppressed and robbed, with no one to rescue^(AB) you.

³⁰You will be pledged to be married to a woman, but another will take her and rape her.^(AC) You will build a house, but you will not live in it.^(AD) You will plant a vineyard, but you will not even begin to enjoy its fruit.^(AE) ³¹Your ox will be slaughtered before your eyes, but you will eat none of it. Your donkey will be forcibly taken from you and will not be returned. Your sheep will be given to your enemies, and no one will rescue them. ³²Your sons and daughters will be given to another nation,^(AF) and you will wear out your eyes watching for them day after day, powerless to lift a hand. ³³A people that you do not know will eat what your land and labor produce, and you will have nothing but cruel oppression^(AG) all your days.^(AH) ³⁴The sights you see will drive you mad.^(AI) ³⁵The Lord will afflict your knees and legs with painful boils^(AJ) that cannot be cured, spreading from the soles of your feet to the top of your head.^(AK)

³⁶The Lord will drive you and the king^(AL) you set over you to a nation unknown to you or your ancestors.^(AM) There you will worship other gods, gods of wood and stone.^(AN) ³⁷You will become a thing of horror,^(AO) a byword^(AP) and an object of ridicule^(AQ) among all the peoples where the Lord will drive you.^(AR)

³⁸You will sow much seed in the field but you will harvest little,^(AS) because locusts^(AT) will devour^(AU) it. ³⁹You will plant vineyards and cultivate them but you will not drink the wine^(AV) or gather the grapes, because worms will eat^(AW) them.^(AX) ⁴⁰You will have olive trees throughout your country but you will not use the oil, because the olives will drop off.^(AY) ⁴¹You will have sons and daughters but you will not keep them, because they will go into captivity.^(AZ) ⁴²Swarms of locusts^(BA) will take over all your trees and the crops of your land.

⁴³The foreigners who reside among you will rise above you higher and higher, but you will sink lower and lower.^(BB) ⁴⁴They will lend to you, but you will not lend to them.^(BC) They will be the head, but you will be the tail.^(BD)

⁴⁵All these curses will come on you. They will pursue you and overtake you^(BE) until you are destroyed,^(BF) because you did not obey the Lord your God and observe the commands and decrees he gave you. ⁴⁶They will be a sign and a wonder to you and your descendants forever.^(BG) ⁴⁷Because you did not serve^(BH) the Lord your God joyfully and gladly^(BI) in the time of prosperity, ⁴⁸therefore in hunger and thirst,^(BJ) in nakedness and dire poverty, you will serve the enemies the Lord sends against you. He will put an iron yoke^(BK) on your neck^(BL) until he has destroyed you.

⁴⁹The Lord will bring a nation against you^(BM) from far away, from the ends of the earth,^(BN) like an eagle^(BO) swooping down, a nation whose language you will not understand,^(BP) ⁵⁰a fierce-looking nation without respect for the old^(BQ) or pity for the young. ⁵¹They will devour the young of your livestock and the crops of your land until you are destroyed. They will leave you no grain, new wine^(BR) or olive oil,^(BS) nor any calves of your herds or lambs of your flocks until you are ruined.^(BT) ⁵²They will lay siege^(BU) to all the cities throughout your land until the high fortified walls in which you trust fall down. They will besiege all the cities throughout the land the Lord your God is giving you.^(BV)

⁵³Because of the suffering your enemy will inflict on you during the siege, you will eat the fruit of the womb, the flesh of the sons and daughters the Lord your God has given you.^(BW) ⁵⁴Even the most gentle and sensitive man among you will have no compassion on his own brother or the wife he loves or his surviving children, ⁵⁵and he will not give to one of them any of the flesh of his children that he is eating. It will be all he has left because of the suffering your enemy will inflict on you during the siege of all your cities.^(BX) ⁵⁶The most gentle and sensitive^(BY) woman among you—so sensitive and gentle that she would not venture to touch the ground with the sole of her foot—will begrudge the husband she loves and her own son or daughter^(BZ) ⁵⁷the afterbirth from her womb and the children she bears. For in her dire need she intends to eat them^(CA) secretly because of the suffering your enemy will inflict on you during the siege of your cities.

⁵⁸If you do not carefully follow all the words of this law,^(CB) which are written in this book, and do not revere^(CC) this glorious and awesome name^(CD)—the Lord your God— ⁵⁹the Lord will send fearful plagues on you and your descendants, harsh and prolonged disasters, and severe and lingering illnesses. ⁶⁰He will bring on you all the diseases of Egypt^(CE) that you dreaded, and they will cling to you. ⁶¹The Lord will also bring on you every kind of sickness and disaster not recorded in this Book of the Law,^(CF) until you are destroyed.^(CG) ⁶²You who were as numerous as the stars in the sky^(CH) will be left but few^(CI) in number, because you did not obey the Lord your God. ⁶³Just as it pleased^(CJ) the Lord to make you prosper and increase in number, so it will please^(CK) him to ruin and destroy you.^(CL) You will be uprooted^(CM) from the land you are entering to possess.

⁶⁴Then the Lord will scatter^(CN) you among all nations,^(CO) from one end of the earth to the other.^(CP) There you will worship other gods—gods of wood and stone, which neither you nor your ancestors have known.^(CQ) ⁶⁵Among those nations you will find no repose, no resting place^(CR) for the sole of your foot. There the Lord will give you an anxious mind, eyes^(CS) weary with longing, and a despairing heart.^(CT) ⁶⁶You will live in constant suspense, filled with dread both night and day, never sure of your life. ⁶⁷In the morning you will say, “If only it were evening!” and in the evening, “If only it were morning!”—because of the terror that will fill your hearts and the sights that your eyes will see.^(CU) ⁶⁸The Lord will send you back in ships to Egypt on a journey I said you should never make again.^(CV) There you will offer yourselves for sale to your enemies as male and female slaves, but no one will buy you.

²³And thy heaven that is over thy head shall be brass, and the earth that is under thee shall be iron.

²⁴The Lord shall make the rain of thy land powder and dust: from heaven shall it come down upon thee, until thou be destroyed.

²⁵The Lord shall cause thee to be smitten before thine enemies: thou shalt go out one way against them, and flee seven ways before them: and shalt be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth.

²⁶And thy carcase shall be meat unto all fowls of the air, and unto the beasts of the earth, and no man shall fray them away.

²⁷The Lord will smite thee with the botch of Egypt, and with the emerods, and with the scab, and with the itch, whereof thou canst not be healed.

²⁸The Lord shall smite thee with madness, and blindness, and astonishment of heart:

²⁹And thou shalt grope at noonday, as the blind gropeth in darkness, and thou shalt not prosper in thy ways: and thou shalt be only oppressed and spoiled evermore, and no man shall save thee.

³⁰Thou shalt betroth a wife, and another man shall lie with her: thou shalt build an house, and thou shalt not dwell therein: thou shalt plant a vineyard, and shalt not gather the grapes thereof.

³¹Thine ox shall be slain before thine eyes, and thou shalt not eat thereof: thine ass shall be violently taken away from before thy face, and shall not be restored to thee: thy sheep shall be given unto thine enemies, and thou shalt have none to rescue them.

⁴⁶And they shall be upon thee for a sign and for a wonder, and upon thy seed for ever.

⁴⁷Because thou servedst not the Lord thy God with joyfulness, and with gladness of heart, for the abundance of all things;

⁴⁸Therefore shalt thou serve thine enemies which the Lord shall send against thee, in hunger, and in thirst, and in nakedness, and in want of all things: and he shall put a yoke of iron upon thy neck, until he have destroyed thee.

⁴⁹The Lord shall bring a nation against thee from far, from the end of the earth, as swift as the eagle flieth; a nation whose tongue thou shalt not understand;

⁵⁰A nation of fierce countenance, which shall not regard the person of the old, nor shew favour to the young:

⁵¹And he shall eat the fruit of thy cattle, and the fruit of thy land, until thou be destroyed: which also shall not leave thee either corn, wine, or oil, or the increase of thy kine, or flocks of thy sheep, until he have destroyed thee.

⁵²And he shall besiege thee in all thy gates, until thy high and fenced walls come down, wherein thou trustedst, throughout all thy land: and he shall besiege thee in all thy gates throughout all thy land, which the Lord thy God hath given thee.

⁵⁵So that he will not give to any of them of the flesh of his children whom he shall eat: because he hath nothing left him in the siege, and in the straitness, wherewith thine enemies shall distress thee in all thy gates.

⁵⁶The tender and delicate woman among you, which would not adventure to set the sole of her foot upon the ground for delicateness and tenderness, her eye shall be evil toward the husband of her bosom, and toward her son, and toward her daughter,

⁵⁷And toward her young one that cometh out from between her feet, and toward her children which she shall bear: for she shall eat them for want of all things secretly in the siege and straitness, wherewith thine enemy shall distress thee in thy gates.

⁵⁸If thou wilt not observe to do all the words of this law that are written in this book, that thou mayest fear this glorious and fearful name, The Lord Thy God;

⁵⁹Then the Lord will make thy plagues wonderful, and the plagues of thy seed, even great plagues, and of long continuance, and sore sicknesses, and of long continuance.

⁶⁰Moreover he will bring upon thee all the diseases of Egypt, which thou wast afraid of; and they shall cleave unto thee.

⁶¹Also every sickness, and every plague, which is not written in the book of this law, them will the Lord bring upon thee, until thou be destroyed.

⁶²And ye shall be left few in number, whereas ye were as the stars of heaven for multitude; because thou wouldest not obey the voice of the Lord thy God.

⁶³And it shall come to pass, that as the Lord rejoiced over you to do you good, and to multiply you; so the Lord will rejoice over you to destroy you, and to bring you to nought; and ye shall be plucked from off the land whither thou goest to possess it.

⁶⁴And the Lord shall scatter thee among all people, from the one end of the earth even unto the other; and there thou shalt serve other gods, which neither thou nor thy fathers have known, even wood and stone.

⁶⁵And among these nations shalt thou find no ease, neither shall the sole of thy foot have rest: but the Lord shall give thee there a trembling heart, and failing of eyes, and sorrow of mind:

⁶⁶And thy life shall hang in doubt before thee; and thou shalt fear day and night, and shalt have none assurance of thy life:

⁶⁷In the morning thou shalt say, Would God it were even! and at even thou shalt say, Would God it were morning! for the fear of thine heart wherewith thou shalt fear, and for the sight of thine eyes which thou shalt see.

⁶⁸And the Lord shall bring thee into Egypt again with ships, by the way whereof I spake unto thee, Thou shalt see it no more again: and there ye shall be sold unto your enemies for bondmen and bondwomen, and no man shall buy you.

¹⁴^(A)“But if you will not listen to me and will not do all these commandments, ¹⁵if you spurn my statutes, and if your soul abhors my rules, so that you will not do all my commandments, but ^(B)break my covenant, ¹⁶then I will do this to you: I will visit you with panic, with ^(C)wasting disease and fever that consume the eyes and make the heart ache. And ^(D)you shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it. ¹⁷I will ^(E)set my face against you, and ^(F)you shall be struck down before your enemies. ^(G)Those who hate you shall rule over you, and ^(H)you shall flee when none pursues you. ¹⁸And if in spite of this you will not listen to me, then I will discipline you again ^(I)sevenfold for your sins, ¹⁹and I will break ^(J)the pride of your power, and I ^(K)will make your heavens like iron and your earth like bronze. ²⁰And ^(L)your strength shall be spent in vain, for ^(M)your land shall not yield its increase, and the trees of the land shall not yield their fruit.

²¹^(N)“Then if you walk contrary to me and will not listen to me, I will continue striking you, sevenfold for your sins. ²²And ^(O)I will let loose the wild beasts against you, which shall bereave you of your children and destroy your livestock and make you few in number, so that ^(P)your roads shall be deserted.

²³“And ^(Q)if by this discipline you are not turned to me ^(R)but walk contrary to me, ²⁴^(S)then I also will walk contrary to you, and I myself will strike you sevenfold for your sins. ²⁵And ^(T)I will bring a sword upon you, that shall execute vengeance for the covenant. And if you gather within your cities, ^(U)I will send pestilence among you, and you shall be delivered into the hand of the enemy. ²⁶^(V)When I break your supply^[a] of bread, ten women shall bake your bread in a single oven and shall dole out your bread again by weight, and ^(W)you shall eat and not be satisfied.

³⁴^(AJ)“Then the land shall enjoy^[b] its Sabbaths as long as it lies desolate, while you are in your enemies' land; then the land shall rest, and enjoy its Sabbaths. ³⁵As long as it lies desolate it shall have rest, the rest that it did not have on your Sabbaths when you were dwelling in it. ³⁶And as for those of you who are left, ^(AK)I will send faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies. The ^(AL)sound of a ^(AM)driven leaf shall put them to flight, and they shall flee as one flees from the sword, and they shall fall when none pursues. ³⁷They shall stumble over one another, as if to escape a sword, though none pursues. And ^(AN)you shall have no power to stand before your enemies. ³⁸And you shall perish among the nations, and the land of your enemies shall eat you up. ³⁹And those of you who are left shall ^(AO)rot away in your enemies' lands because of their iniquity, and also because of the iniquities of their fathers they shall rot away like them.

¹⁴“‘But if you will not listen to me and carry out all these commands,^(A) ¹⁵and if you reject my decrees and abhor my laws^(B) and fail to carry out all my commands and so violate my covenant,^(C) ¹⁶then I will do this to you: I will bring on you sudden terror, wasting diseases and fever^(D) that will destroy your sight and sap your strength.^(E) You will plant seed in vain, because your enemies will eat it.^(F) ¹⁷I will set my face^(G) against you so that you will be defeated^(H) by your enemies;^(I) those who hate you will rule over you,^(J) and you will flee even when no one is pursuing you.^(K)
