because they didn’t help you with food or water on your journey out of Egypt, and because they hired Balaam, Beor’s son, from Pethor of Mesopotamia to curse you. But the Lord your God wasn’t interested in listening to Balaam. The Lord your God turned that curse into a blessing because the Lord your God loves you. So don’t be concerned with their health and well-being as long as you live.

For they did not come to meet you with bread and water(A) on your way when you came out of Egypt, and they hired Balaam(B) son of Beor from Pethor in Aram Naharaim[a](C) to pronounce a curse on you.(D) However, the Lord your God would not listen to Balaam but turned the curse(E) into a blessing for you, because the Lord your God loves(F) you. Do not seek a treaty(G) of friendship with them as long as you live.(H)
