Deuteronomy 1:43-45
New English Translation
43 I spoke to you, but you did not listen. Instead you rebelled against the Lord[a] and recklessly went up to the hill country. 44 The Amorite inhabitants of that area[b] confronted[c] you and chased you like a swarm of bees, striking you down from Seir as far as Hormah.[d] 45 Then you came back and wept before the Lord, but he[e] paid no attention to you whatsoever.[f]

- Deuteronomy 1:44 sn Hormah is probably Khirbet el-Meshash, 5.5 mi (9 km) west of Arad and 7.5 mi (12 km) SE of Beer Sheba. Its name is a derivative of the verb חָרָם (kharam, “to ban; to exterminate”). See Num 21:3.
- Deuteronomy 1:45 tn Heb “the Lord.” The pronoun (“he”) has been employed in the translation here for stylistic reasons, to avoid redundancy.
- Deuteronomy 1:45 tn Heb “did not hear your voice and did not turn an ear to you.”

New International Version
43 So I told you, but you would not listen. You rebelled against the Lord’s command and in your arrogance you marched up into the hill country. 44 The Amorites who lived in those hills came out against you; they chased you like a swarm of bees(A) and beat you down from Seir(B) all the way to Hormah.(C) 45 You came back and wept before the Lord,(D) but he paid no attention(E) to your weeping and turned a deaf ear(F) to you.
