6 (A)Take to heart these words which I command you today.(B) 7 Keep repeating them to your children. Recite them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you get up.(C) 8 Bind them on your arm as a sign[a] and let them be as a pendant on your forehead.(D) 9 Write them on the doorposts of your houses and on your gates.(E)

- 6:8 Bind them…as a sign: these injunctions were probably meant merely in a figurative sense; cf. Ex 13:9, 16. In the late postexilic period, they were taken quite literally, and devout Jews tied on their arms and foreheads “phylacteries,” boxes containing strips of parchment on which these words were inscribed; cf. Mt 23:5.

7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
8 And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.
9 And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.
