40 (A)saying to Aaron, ‘Make us gods to go before us; as for this Moses who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’ 41 (B)And they made a calf in those days, offered sacrifices to the idol, and (C)rejoiced in the works of their own hands. 42 Then (D)God turned and gave them up to worship (E)the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the Prophets:

(F)‘Did you offer Me slaughtered animals and sacrifices during forty years in the wilderness,
O house of Israel?

40 They told Aaron, ‘Make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who led us out of Egypt—we don’t know what has happened to him!’[a](A) 41 That was the time they made an idol in the form of a calf. They brought sacrifices to it and reveled in what their own hands had made.(B) 42 But God turned away from them(C) and gave them over to the worship of the sun, moon and stars.(D) This agrees with what is written in the book of the prophets:

“‘Did you bring me sacrifices and offerings
    forty years in the wilderness, people of Israel?
