²⁴Some of the leaders agreed with what Paul said, but others did not. ²⁵Since they could not agree among themselves, they started leaving. But Paul said, “The Holy Spirit said the right thing when he sent Isaiah the prophet ²⁶^(A) to tell our ancestors,

‘Go to these people
    and tell them:
You will listen and listen,
    but never understand.
You will look and look,
    but never see.

²⁴Some were convinced by what he said, but others would not believe.^(A) ²⁵They disagreed among themselves and began to leave after Paul had made this final statement: “The Holy Spirit spoke the truth to your ancestors when he said^(B) through Isaiah the prophet:

²⁶“‘Go to this people and say,
“You will be ever hearing but never understanding;
you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.”
