No one while serving-as-a-soldier entangles himself in the affairs of life, in order that he may please the one having enlisted him. And also if one competes [in an athletic contest], he is not crowned unless he competes lawfully.

Join with me in suffering,(A) like a good soldier(B) of Christ Jesus. No one serving as a soldier gets entangled in civilian affairs, but rather tries to please his commanding officer. Similarly, anyone who competes as an athlete does not receive the victor’s crown(C) except by competing according to the rules.
