17 Things will be said that will burn and hurt for a long time to come. Hymenaeus and Philetus, in their love of argument, are men like that. 18 They have left the path of truth, preaching the lie that the resurrection of the dead has already occurred; and they have weakened the faith of some who believe them.

19 But God’s truth stands firm like a great rock, and nothing can shake it. It is a foundation stone with these words written on it: “The Lord knows those who are really his,” and “A person who calls himself a Christian should not be doing things that are wrong.”

17 Their teaching will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus(A) and Philetus, 18 who have departed from the truth. They say that the resurrection has already taken place,(B) and they destroy the faith of some.(C) 19 Nevertheless, God’s solid foundation stands firm,(D) sealed with this inscription: “The Lord knows those who are his,”(E) and, “Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord(F) must turn away from wickedness.”
