⁸ “So now this is what you are to say to my servant David: ‘This is what the Lord of Armies says: I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock, to be ruler over my people Israel.^{(A) 9} I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have destroyed all your enemies before you. I will make a great name^(B) for you like that of the greatest on the earth.^{(C) 10} I will designate a place^(D) for my people Israel and plant them,^(E) so that they may live there and not be disturbed again. Evildoers will not continue to oppress them as they have done ¹¹ ever since the day I ordered judges to be over my people Israel.^(F) I will give you rest from all your enemies.

“‘The Lord declares to you: The Lord himself will make a house for you. ¹² When your time comes and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up after you your descendant, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom.^{(G) 13} He is the one who will build a house for my name,^(H) and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.^{(I) 14} I will be his father, and he will be my son.^(J) When he does wrong, I will discipline him with a rod of men and blows from mortals. ¹⁵ But my faithful love will never leave him^(K) as it did when I removed it from Saul, whom I removed from before you.^{(L) 16} Your house and kingdom will endure before me^[a] forever,^(M) and your throne will be established forever.’”^(N)

“‘Furthermore, I declare to you that the Lord himself will build a house for you. ¹¹ When your time comes to be with your ancestors, I will raise up after you your descendant, who is one of your own sons, and I will establish his kingdom. ¹² He is the one who will build a house for me,^(C) and I will establish his throne forever. ¹³ I will be his father, and he will be my son.^(D) I will not remove my faithful love from him as I removed it from the one who was before you.^{(E) 14} I will appoint him over my house and my kingdom forever, and his throne will be established forever.’”^(F)

¹⁷ “For this is what the Lord says: David will never fail to have a man sitting on the throne of the house of Israel.^{(A) 18} The Levitical priests will never fail to have a man always before me to offer burnt offerings, to burn grain offerings, and to make sacrifices.”^(B)

¹⁹ The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: ²⁰ “This is what the Lord says: If you can break my covenant with the day and my covenant with the night so that day and night cease to come at their regular time,^{(C) 21} then also my covenant with my servant David^(D) may be broken. If that could happen, then he would not have a son reigning on his throne and the Levitical priests would not be my ministers.^(E)
