So Joab's men, the royal bodyguards, and all the other soldiers left Jerusalem with Abishai to go after Sheba. When they reached the large rock at Gibeon, Amasa met them. Joab was dressed for battle, with a sword in its sheath fastened to his belt. As he came forward, the sword fell out. Joab said to Amasa, “How are you, my friend?” and took hold of his beard with his right hand in order to kiss him.

So Joab’s men and the Kerethites(A) and Pelethites and all the mighty warriors went out under the command of Abishai. They marched out from Jerusalem to pursue Sheba son of Bikri.

While they were at the great rock in Gibeon,(B) Amasa came to meet them. Joab(C) was wearing his military tunic, and strapped over it at his waist was a belt with a dagger in its sheath. As he stepped forward, it dropped out of its sheath.

Joab said to Amasa, “How are you, my brother?” Then Joab took Amasa by the beard with his right hand to kiss him.
