Then the people of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah.

When they told David, “It was the people of Jabesh-gilead who buried Saul,”(A) David sent messengers to the people of Jabesh-gilead and said to them, “May you be blessed by the Lord, because you showed this loyalty to Saul your lord and buried him!(B) Now may the Lord show steadfast love and faithfulness to you! And I, too, will reward you because you have done this thing. Therefore let your hands be strong and be valiant, for Saul your lord is dead, and the house of Judah has anointed me king over them.”

Then the men of Judah came to Hebron,(A) and there they anointed(B) David king over the tribe of Judah.

When David was told that it was the men from Jabesh Gilead(C) who had buried Saul, he sent messengers to them to say to them, “The Lord bless(D) you for showing this kindness to Saul your master by burying him. May the Lord now show you kindness and faithfulness,(E) and I too will show you the same favor because you have done this. Now then, be strong(F) and brave, for Saul your master is dead, and the people of Judah have anointed me king over them.”
