2 Samuel 1:21-23
The Voice
21 Mountains of Gilboa, let no rain or dew water you;
may your mountain fields offer only dust.
The shield of the mighty was defiled with your enemy’s blood;
even the shield of Saul is no longer anointed with oil by the Eternal.
22 With the blood of the slain
and with the fat of the strong,
Jonathan’s bow never lost aim;
Saul’s sword never came back empty.
23 Saul and Jonathan were beloved and delightful,
always together in life and now in death.
They were faster than eagles;
they were mightier than lions.
2 Samuel 1:21-23
New International Version
21 “Mountains of Gilboa,(A)
may you have neither dew(B) nor rain,(C)
may no showers fall on your terraced fields.[a](D)
For there the shield of the mighty was despised,
the shield of Saul—no longer rubbed with oil.(E)
22 “From the blood(F) of the slain,
from the flesh of the mighty,
the bow(G) of Jonathan did not turn back,
the sword of Saul did not return unsatisfied.
23 Saul and Jonathan—
in life they were loved and admired,
and in death they were not parted.
They were swifter than eagles,(H)
they were stronger than lions.(I)
