2 Peter 2:19-21
Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition
19 They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption; for whatever overcomes a man, to that he is enslaved. 20 For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overpowered, the last state has become worse for them than the first. 21 For it would have been better for them never to have known the way of righteousness than after knowing it to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them.

New International Version
19 They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity—for “people are slaves to whatever has mastered them.”(A) 20 If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing(B) our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ(C) and are again entangled in it and are overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning.(D) 21 It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them.(E)
