11 Elisha stared steadily at Hazael until he was embarrassed, and then the man of God wept. 12 Hazael said, “Why are you weeping, my lord?” He answered, “Because I know the evil that you will do to the sons (descendants) of Israel. You will set their strongholds on fire, kill their young men with the sword, smash their children to pieces, and rip up their pregnant women.” 13 Then Hazael said, “Surely not! For what is your servant, who is nothing more than a dog, that he would do this monstrous thing?” And Elisha answered, “The Lord has shown me that you will be king over Aram.”

12 “Why is my lord weeping?” asked Hazael.

“Because I know the harm(C) you will do to the Israelites,” he answered. “You will set fire to their fortified places, kill their young men with the sword, dash(D) their little children(E) to the ground, and rip open(F) their pregnant women.”

13 Hazael said, “How could your servant, a mere dog,(G) accomplish such a feat?”

“The Lord has shown me that you will become king(H) of Aram,” answered Elisha.
