²⁵ Jeremiah chanted a dirge^(A) over Josiah, and all the singing men and singing women still speak of Josiah in their dirges to this very day. They established them as a statute for Israel, and indeed they are written in the Dirges.

¹² He did what was evil in the sight of the Lord his God and did not humble himself^(A) before Jeremiah the prophet at the Lord’s command.^(B)

The Decree of Cyrus

1 In^(A) the first year of Cyrus king of Persia,^[a] the word of the Lord spoken through Jeremiah was fulfilled.^(B) The Lord put it into the mind^(C) of King Cyrus to issue a proclamation throughout his entire kingdom and to put it in writing:

² In the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, understood from the books according to the word of the Lord to Jeremiah the prophet that the number of years for the desolation of Jerusalem would be 70.^(A)

¹⁷ Then what was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled:

¹⁴ And they said, “Some say John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”^(A)
