³ So Samuel said to all the Israelites, “If you are returning^(A) to the Lord with all your hearts, then rid^(B) yourselves of the foreign gods and the Ashtoreths^(C) and commit^(D) yourselves to the Lord and serve him only,^(E) and he will deliver^(F) you out of the hand of the Philistines.”

⁵ He followed Ashtoreth^(A) the goddess of the Sidonians, and Molek^(B) the detestable god of the Ammonites. ⁶ So Solomon did evil^(C) in the eyes of the Lord; he did not follow the Lord completely, as David his father had done.

⁷ On a hill east^(D) of Jerusalem, Solomon built a high place for Chemosh^(E) the detestable god of Moab, and for Molek^(F) the detestable god of the Ammonites. ⁸ He did the same for all his foreign wives, who burned incense and offered sacrifices to their gods.
