5 For neither at any time were we found using words of flattery, as ye know, nor a cloak of covetousness, God is witness; 6 nor seeking glory of men, neither from you nor from others, when we might have [a]claimed authority as apostles of Christ. 7 But we were [b]gentle in the midst of you, as when a nurse cherisheth her own children:

New International Version
5 You know we never used flattery, nor did we put on a mask to cover up greed(A)—God is our witness.(B) 6 We were not looking for praise from people,(C) not from you or anyone else, even though as apostles(D) of Christ we could have asserted our authority.(E) 7 Instead, we were like young children[a] among you.
