If you send these gifts and then praise the God of Israel, perhaps he will stop persecuting you and your god. Don’t be stubborn and rebellious as Pharaoh and the Egyptians were. They wouldn’t let Israel go until God had destroyed them with dreadful plagues.

The Philistines asked, “What guilt offering should we send to him?”

They replied, “Five gold tumors and five gold rats, according to the number(A) of the Philistine rulers, because the same plague(B) has struck both you and your rulers. Make models of the tumors(C) and of the rats that are destroying the country, and give glory(D) to Israel’s god. Perhaps he will lift his hand from you and your gods and your land. Why do you harden(E) your hearts as the Egyptians and Pharaoh did? When Israel’s god dealt harshly with them,(F) did they(G) not send the Israelites out so they could go on their way?
