1 Samuel 25:25-27
New American Bible (Revised Edition)
25 My lord, do not pay any attention to that scoundrel Nabal, for he is just like his name. His name means fool,[a] and he acts the fool. I, your maidservant, did not see the young men whom my lord sent. 26 Now, therefore, my lord, as the Lord lives, and as you live, the Lord has kept you from shedding blood and from avenging yourself by your own hand. May your enemies and those who seek to harm my lord become as Nabal![b](A) 27 Accept this gift, then, which your maidservant has brought for my lord, and let it be given to the young men who follow my lord.

- 25:25 Hebrew nabal means “fool” (cf. Is 32:5–7). Abigail, on the other hand, acts wisely to save herself and her household by offering prudent counsel to the future king of Israel.
- 25:26 Abigail, encouraging David to trust in God’s promise, anticipates that some misfortune will shortly overtake Nabal, as in fact it does (vv. 37–38).

New International Version
25 Please pay no attention, my lord, to that wicked man Nabal. He is just like his name—his name means Fool(A),(B) and folly goes with him. And as for me, your servant, I did not see the men my lord sent. 26 And now, my lord, as surely as the Lord your God lives and as you live, since the Lord has kept you from bloodshed(C) and from avenging(D) yourself with your own hands, may your enemies and all who are intent on harming my lord be like Nabal.(E) 27 And let this gift,(F) which your servant has brought to my lord, be given to the men who follow you.
