5 The Philistines gathered to fight against Israel, with 30,000 war-wagons, 6,000 horsemen, and people like the sand on the sea shore. They came and set up their tents at Michmash, east of Beth-aven. 6 The men of Israel saw that they were in trouble. The people were in a place of danger. So the people hid themselves in caves, bushes, hill-sides, graves and wells. 7 Some of the Hebrews crossed the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. But as for Saul, he was still in Gilgal, and all the people followed him in fear.

5 The Philistines assembled(A) to fight Israel, with three thousand[a] chariots, six thousand charioteers, and soldiers as numerous as the sand(B) on the seashore. They went up and camped at Mikmash,(C) east of Beth Aven.(D) 6 When the Israelites saw that their situation was critical and that their army was hard pressed, they hid(E) in caves and thickets, among the rocks, and in pits and cisterns.(F) 7 Some Hebrews even crossed the Jordan to the land of Gad(G) and Gilead.
Saul remained at Gilgal, and all the troops with him were quaking(H) with fear.
