10 Samuel took the flask of oil,^(A) poured it out on Saul’s head,^(B) kissed him, and said, “Hasn’t the Lord anointed you^(C) ruler over His inheritance?^[a](D)

⁶ He said to his men, “I swear before the Lord: I would never do such a thing to my lord, the Lord’s anointed.^(A) I will never lift my hand against him, since he is the Lord’s anointed.”^{(B) 7} With these words David persuaded^[a] his men, and he did not let them rise up against Saul.

Then Saul left the cave and went on his way.

¹⁴ David questioned him, “How is it that you were not afraid to lift your hand to destroy the Lord’s anointed?”^(A)

¹⁶ For David had said to the Amalekite, “Your blood is on your own head^(A) because your own mouth testified against you by saying, ‘I killed the Lord’s anointed.’”
