So Elders, Lead By Example

Therefore[a] I exhort the elders among you, I the fellow-elder and witness of the sufferings of Christ, the sharer[b] also of the glory going-to be revealed: Shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising-oversight— not by-compulsion[c], but willingly[d], according to God; nor greedily, but eagerly; nor as lording-over[e] your lots[f], but being patterns for the flock. And the Chief-shepherd having appeared, you will receive the unfading crown of [g] glory.

Young Men, Follow

Likewise, younger men— be subject to the[h] elders.

Everyone, Be Humble And Keep Watch For The Adversary

And everyone— clothe-yourselves-with humblemindedness toward one another. Because “God opposes the proud, but He gives grace to the humble” [Prov 3:34]. Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God in order that He may exalt you at the proper-time, having cast all your anxiety[i] upon Him, because He is concerned[j] about you. Be sober, keep-watch. Your adversary the devil is walking-around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour— whom resist, firm in the[k] faith, knowing that the same kinds of sufferings are being accomplished[l] by your brotherhood in the world.

And The God of All Grace Will Establish You After Your Sufferings

10 And the God of all grace, the One having called you into His eternal glory in Christ Jesus— you having suffered a little— will Himself restore, support, strengthen, establish you. 11 To Him be the dominion forever, amen.

12 I wrote to you through Silvanus, the faithful brother, as I count him, with a few words exhorting and bearing-witness that this[m] is the true grace of God— in which, stand [firm]. 13 She in Babylon[n] chosen-with you greets you. Also Mark, my son. 14 Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to you, to all the ones in Christ.

To the Elders and the Flock

To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder(A) and a witness(B) of Christ’s sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed:(C) Be shepherds of God’s flock(D) that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be;(E) not pursuing dishonest gain,(F) but eager to serve; not lording it over(G) those entrusted to you, but being examples(H) to the flock. And when the Chief Shepherd(I) appears, you will receive the crown of glory(J) that will never fade away.(K)

In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves(L) to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility(M) toward one another, because,

“God opposes the proud
but shows favor to the humble.”[a](N)

Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.(O) Cast all your anxiety on him(P) because he cares for you.(Q)

Be alert and of sober mind.(R) Your enemy the devil prowls around(S) like a roaring lion(T) looking for someone to devour. Resist him,(U) standing firm in the faith,(V) because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.(W)

10 And the God of all grace, who called you(X) to his eternal glory(Y) in Christ, after you have suffered a little while,(Z) will himself restore you and make you strong,(AA) firm and steadfast. 11 To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.(AB)

Final Greetings

12 With the help of Silas,[b](AC) whom I regard as a faithful brother, I have written to you briefly,(AD) encouraging you and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Stand fast in it.(AE)

13 She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you her greetings, and so does my son Mark.(AF) 14 Greet one another with a kiss of love.(AG)

Peace(AH) to all of you who are in Christ.
