In [connection with] all this, they [the unbelievers] are resentful and surprised that you do not [think like them, value their values and] run [hand in hand] with them into the same excesses of dissipation and immoral freedom, and they criticize and abuse and ridicule you and make fun of your values. But they will [have to] give an account to Him who is ready to judge and pass sentence on the living and the dead. For this is why the good news [of salvation] was preached [in their lifetimes] even to those who are dead, that though they were judged in the flesh as men are, they may live in the spirit according to [the will and purpose of] God.

They are surprised that you do not join them in their reckless, wild living, and they heap abuse on you.(A) But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.(B) For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead,(C) so that they might be judged according to human standards in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit.
