20 who in former times did not obey, when God waited patiently in the days of Noah, during the building of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight lives, were saved through water.(A) 21 And baptism, which this prefigured, now saves you—not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for[a] a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,(B) 22 who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers made subject to him.(C)

20 to those who were disobedient long ago when God waited patiently(A) in the days of Noah while the ark was being built.(B) In it only a few people, eight in all,(C) were saved(D) through water, 21 and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you(E) also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience(F) toward God.[a] It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ,(G) 22 who has gone into heaven(H) and is at God’s right hand(I)—with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.(J)
