⁶ They smashed all the carved^(A) paneling
    with their axes and hatchets.
⁷ They burned your sanctuary to the ground;
    they defiled^(B) the dwelling place^(C) of your Name.^(D)
8 They said in their hearts, “We will crush^(E) them completely!”
    They burned^(F) every place where God was worshiped in the land.

¹⁰ Your sacred cities^(A) have become a wasteland;
    even Zion is a wasteland, Jerusalem a desolation.^(B)
11 Our holy and glorious temple,^(C) where our ancestors praised you,
    has been burned with fire,
    and all that we treasured^(D) lies in ruins.

⁷ The Lord has rejected his altar
    and abandoned his sanctuary.^(A)
He has given the walls of her palaces^(B)
    into the hands of the enemy;
they have raised a shout in the house of the Lord
    as on the day of an appointed festival.^(C)

¹² Therefore because of you,
    Zion will be plowed like a field,
Jerusalem will become a heap of rubble,^(A)
    the temple^(B) hill a mound overgrown with thickets.^(C)
