²⁹ All afternoon they kept on raving until the offering of the evening sacrifice,^(A) but there was no sound; no one answered, no one paid attention.^(B)

³⁶ At the time for offering the evening sacrifice,^(A) the prophet Elijah approached the altar and said, “Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel,^(B) today let it be known^(C) that you are God in Israel and I am your servant, and that at your word I have done all these things.

¹⁵ Then King Ahaz commanded the priest Uriah, “Offer on the great altar the morning burnt offering, the evening grain offering, and the king’s burnt offering and his grain offering. Also offer the burnt offering of all the people of the land, their grain offering, and their drink offerings. Splatter on the altar all the blood of the burnt offering and all the blood of sacrifice. The bronze altar will be for me to seek guidance.”^[a]

Ezra’s Confession

⁴ Everyone who trembled at the words of the God of Israel^(A) gathered around me, because of the unfaithfulness of the exiles,^(B) while I sat devastated until the evening offering.^{(C) 5} At the evening offering, I got up from my time of humiliation, with my tunic and robe torn. Then I fell on my knees and spread out my hands to the Lord my God.^(D)
