Good News Translation
15 It was the will of the Lord to bring about what he had spoken to Jeroboam son of Nebat through the prophet Ahijah from Shiloh. This is why the king did not pay any attention to the people.
16 (A)When the people saw that the king would not listen to them, they shouted, “Down with David and his family! What have they ever done for us? People of Israel, let's go home! Let Rehoboam look out for himself!”
So the people of Israel rebelled, 17 leaving Rehoboam as king only of the people who lived in the territory of Judah.
18 Then King Rehoboam sent Adoniram, who was in charge of the forced labor, to go to the Israelites, but they stoned him to death. At this, Rehoboam hurriedly got in his chariot and escaped to Jerusalem. 19 Ever since that time the people of the northern kingdom of Israel have been in rebellion against the dynasty of David.
20 When the people of Israel heard that Jeroboam had returned from Egypt, they invited him to a meeting of the people and made him king of Israel. Only the tribe of Judah remained loyal to David's descendants.

15 So the king did not listen to the people, for this turn of events was from the Lord,(A) to fulfill the word the Lord had spoken to Jeroboam son of Nebat through Ahijah(B) the Shilonite.
16 When all Israel saw that the king refused to listen to them, they answered the king:
“What share(C) do we have in David,
what part in Jesse’s son?
To your tents, Israel!(D)
Look after your own house, David!”
So the Israelites went home.(E) 17 But as for the Israelites who were living in the towns of Judah,(F) Rehoboam still ruled over them.
18 King Rehoboam sent out Adoniram,[a](G) who was in charge of forced labor, but all Israel stoned him to death.(H) King Rehoboam, however, managed to get into his chariot and escape to Jerusalem. 19 So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David(I) to this day.
20 When all the Israelites heard that Jeroboam had returned, they sent and called him to the assembly and made him king over all Israel. Only the tribe of Judah remained loyal to the house of David.(J)
