5 but whoever keeps his word, in him truly love for God is perfected. By this we may be sure that we are in him: 6 he who says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.
A New Commandment
7 Beloved, I am writing you no new commandment, but an old commandment which you had from the beginning; the old commandment is the word which you have heard.

5 But if anyone obeys his word,(A) love for God[a] is truly made complete in them.(B) This is how we know(C) we are in him: 6 Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.(D)
7 Dear friends,(E) I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning.(F) This old command is the message you have heard.
