4 But if we claim to know him and don't obey him, we are lying and the truth isn't in our hearts. 5 We truly love God only when we obey him as we should, and then we know we belong to him. 6 If we say we are his, we must follow the example of Christ.

4 Whoever says, “I know him,”(A) but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person.(B) 5 But if anyone obeys his word,(C) love for God[a] is truly made complete in them.(D) This is how we know(E) we are in him: 6 Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.(F)
