Fy mhlant bychain, y pethau hyn yr wyf yn eu hysgrifennu atoch, fel na phechoch. Ac o phecha neb, y mae i ni Eiriolwr gyda’r Tad, Iesu Grist y Cyfiawn: Ac efe yw’r iawn dros ein pechodau ni: ac nid dros yr eiddom ni yn unig, eithr dros bechodau yr holl fyd. Ac wrth hyn y gwyddom yr adwaenom ef, os cadwn ni ei orchmynion ef. Yr hwn sydd yn dywedyd, Mi a’i hadwaen ef, ac heb gadw ei orchmynion ef, celwyddog yw, a’r gwirionedd nid yw ynddo. Eithr yr hwn a gadwo ei air ef, yn wir yn hwn y mae cariad Duw yn berffaith: wrth hyn y gwyddom ein bod ynddo ef. Yr hwn a ddywed ei fod yn aros ynddo ef, a ddylai yntau felly rodio, megis ag y rhodiodd ef. Y brodyr, nid gorchymyn newydd yr wyf yn ei ysgrifennu atoch, eithr gorchymyn hen yr hwn oedd gennych o’r dechreuad. Yr hen orchymyn yw’r gair a glywsoch o’r dechreuad. Trachefn, gorchymyn newydd yr wyf yn ei ysgrifennu atoch, yr hyn sydd wir ynddo ef, ac ynoch chwithau: oblegid y tywyllwch a aeth heibio, a’r gwir oleuni sydd yr awron yn tywynnu. Yr hwn a ddywed ei fod yn y goleuni, ac a gasao ei frawd, yn y tywyllwch y mae hyd y pryd hwn. 10 Yr hwn sydd yn caru ei frawd, sydd yn aros yn y goleuni, ac nid oes rhwystr ynddo. 11 Eithr yr hwn sydd yn casáu ei frawd, yn y tywyllwch y mae, ac yn y tywyllwch y mae yn rhodio; ac ni ŵyr i ba le y mae yn myned, oblegid y mae’r tywyllwch wedi dallu ei lygaid ef. 12 Ysgrifennu yr wyf atoch chwi, blant bychain, oblegid maddau i chwi eich pechodau er mwyn ei enw ef. 13 Ysgrifennu yr wyf atoch chwi, dadau, am adnabod ohonoch yr hwn sydd o’r dechreuad. Ysgrifennu yr wyf atoch chwi, wŷr ieuainc, am orchfygu ohonoch yr un drwg. Ysgrifennu yr wyf atoch chwi, rai bychain, am i chwi adnabod y Tad. 14 Ysgrifennais atoch chwi, dadau, am adnabod ohonoch yr hwn sydd o’r dechreuad. Ysgrifennais atoch chwi, wŷr ieuainc, am eich bod yn gryfion, a bod gair Duw yn aros ynoch, a gorchfygu ohonoch yr un drwg. 15 Na cherwch y byd, na’r pethau sydd yn y byd. O châr neb y byd, nid yw cariad y Tad ynddo ef. 16 Canys pob peth a’r sydd yn y byd, megis chwant y cnawd, a chwant y llygaid, a balchder y bywyd, nid yw o’r Tad, eithr o’r byd y mae. 17 A’r byd sydd yn myned heibio, a’i chwant hefyd: ond yr hwn sydd yn gwneuthur ewyllys Duw, sydd yn aros yn dragywydd. 18 O blant bychain, yr awr ddiwethaf ydyw: ac megis y clywsoch y daw anghrist, yr awron hefyd y mae anghristiau lawer; wrth yr hyn y gwyddom mai’r awr ddiwethaf ydyw. 19 Oddi wrthym ni yr aethant hwy allan, eithr nid oeddynt ohonom ni: canys pe buasent ohonom ni, hwy a arosasent gyda ni: eithr hyn a fu, fel yr eglurid nad ydynt hwy oll ohonom ni. 20 Eithr y mae gennych chwi eneiniad oddi wrth y Sanctaidd hwnnw, a chwi a wyddoch bob peth. 21 Nid ysgrifennais atoch oblegid na wyddech y gwirionedd, eithr oblegid eich bod yn ei wybod, ac nad oes un celwydd o’r gwirionedd. 22 Pwy yw’r celwyddog, ond yr hwn sydd yn gwadu nad Iesu yw’r Crist? Efe yw’r anghrist, yr hwn sydd yn gwadu’r Tad a’r Mab. 23 Pob un a’r sydd yn gwadu’r Mab, nid oes ganddo’r Tad chwaith: [ond] yr hwn sydd yn cyffesu’r Mab, y mae’r Tad ganddo hefyd. 24 Arhosed gan hynny ynoch chwi yr hyn a glywsoch o’r dechreuad. Od erys ynoch yr hyn a glywsoch o’r dechreuad chwithau hefyd a gewch aros yn y Mab ac yn y Tad. 25 A hon yw’r addewid a addawodd efe i ni, sef bywyd tragwyddol. 26 Y pethau hyn a ysgrifennais atoch ynghylch y rhai sydd yn eich hudo. 27 Ond y mae’r eneiniad a dderbyniasoch ganddo ef, yn aros ynoch chwi, ac nid oes arnoch eisiau dysgu o neb chwi; eithr fel y mae’r un eneiniad yn eich dysgu chwi am bob peth, a gwir yw, ac nid yw gelwydd; ac megis y’ch dysgodd chwi, yr arhoswch ynddo. 28 Ac yr awron, blant bychain, arhoswch ynddo; fel, pan ymddangoso efe, y byddo hyder gennym, ac na chywilyddiom ger ei fron ef yn ei ddyfodiad. 29 Os gwyddoch ei fod ef yn gyfiawn, chwi a wyddoch fod pob un a’r sydd yn gwneuthur cyfiawnder, wedi ei eni ohono ef.

My dear children,(A) I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate(B) with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins,(C) and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.(D)

Love and Hatred for Fellow Believers

We know(E) that we have come to know him(F) if we keep his commands.(G) Whoever says, “I know him,”(H) but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person.(I) But if anyone obeys his word,(J) love for God[a] is truly made complete in them.(K) This is how we know(L) we are in him: Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.(M)

Dear friends,(N) I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning.(O) This old command is the message you have heard. Yet I am writing you a new command;(P) its truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing(Q) and the true light(R) is already shining.(S)

Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister[b](T) is still in the darkness.(U) 10 Anyone who loves their brother and sister[c] lives in the light,(V) and there is nothing in them to make them stumble.(W) 11 But anyone who hates a brother or sister(X) is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness.(Y) They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them.(Z)

Reasons for Writing

12 I am writing to you, dear children,(AA)
because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name.(AB)
13 I am writing to you, fathers,
because you know him who is from the beginning.(AC)
I am writing to you, young men,
because you have overcome(AD) the evil one.(AE)

14 I write to you, dear children,(AF)
    because you know the Father.
I write to you, fathers,
because you know him who is from the beginning.(AG)
I write to you, young men,
    because you are strong,(AH)
and the word of God(AI) lives in you,(AJ)
and you have overcome the evil one.(AK)

On Not Loving the World

15 Do not love the world or anything in the world.(AL) If anyone loves the world, love for the Father[d] is not in them.(AM) 16 For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh,(AN) the lust of the eyes,(AO) and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. 17 The world and its desires pass away,(AP) but whoever does the will of God(AQ) lives forever.

Warnings Against Denying the Son

18 Dear children, this is the last hour;(AR) and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming,(AS) even now many antichrists have come.(AT) This is how we know it is the last hour. 19 They went out from us,(AU) but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us.(AV)

20 But you have an anointing(AW) from the Holy One,(AX) and all of you know the truth.[e](AY) 21 I do not write to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it(AZ) and because no lie comes from the truth. 22 Who is the liar? It is whoever denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a person is the antichrist—denying the Father and the Son.(BA) 23 No one who denies the Son has the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also.(BB)

24 As for you, see that what you have heard from the beginning(BC) remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father.(BD) 25 And this is what he promised us—eternal life.(BE)

26 I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray.(BF) 27 As for you, the anointing(BG) you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things(BH) and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him.(BI)

God’s Children and Sin

28 And now, dear children,(BJ) continue in him, so that when he appears(BK) we may be confident(BL) and unashamed before him at his coming.(BM)

29 If you know that he is righteous,(BN) you know that everyone who does what is right has been born of him.(BO)
