3 If I give away everything I own, and if I hand my body over so that I may boast but do not have love, I gain nothing.(A)
4 [a]Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, [love] is not pompous, it is not inflated,(B) 5 it is not rude, it does not seek its own interests, it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over injury,(C)

- 13:4–7 This paragraph is developed by personification and enumeration, defining love by what it does or does not do. The Greek contains fifteen verbs; it is natural to translate many of them by adjectives in English.

New International Version
3 If I give all I possess to the poor(A) and give over my body to hardship that I may boast,[a](B) but do not have love, I gain nothing.
4 Love is patient,(C) love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.(D) 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking,(E) it is not easily angered,(F) it keeps no record of wrongs.(G)
