GOD’S WORD Translation
7 So don’t worship false gods as some of them did, as Scripture says, “The people sat down to a feast which turned into an orgy.” 8 We shouldn’t sin sexually as some of them did. Twenty-three thousand of them died on one day. 9 We shouldn’t put the Lord [a] to the test as some of them did. They were killed by snakes.

7 Do not be idolaters,(A) as some of them were; as it is written: “The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.”[a](B) 8 We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did—and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died.(C) 9 We should not test Christ,[b](D) as some of them did—and were killed by snakes.(E)
