⁵But God was not pleased with most of them. They died in the desert.

⁶And these things that happened are examples for us. They should stop us from wanting evil things as those people did. ⁷Do not worship idols, as some of them did. It is written in the Scriptures: “The people sat down to eat and drink. Then they got up and had wild parties.”^[a]

⁵Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.^(A)

⁶Now these things occurred as examples^(B) to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did. ⁷Do not be idolaters,^(C) as some of them were; as it is written: “The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.”^[a]^(D)
