But God was not pleased with most of them, so they ·died [or were struck down; or (their bodies) were scattered] in the desert [C as judgment for unbelief and refusing to enter the Promised Land; Num. 13—14].

And these things happened as examples for us, to stop us from ·wanting [desiring; craving] evil things as those people did. Do not worship idols, as some of them did. Now these things occurred as examples(B) to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did. Do not be idolaters,(C) as some of them were; as it is written: “The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.”[a](D)
