New International Version (NIV)
Version
Psalm 137

Psalm 137

By the rivers of Babylon(A) we sat and wept(B)
    when we remembered Zion.(C)
There on the poplars(D)
    we hung our harps,(E)
for there our captors(F) asked us for songs,
    our tormentors demanded(G) songs of joy;
    they said, “Sing us one of the songs of Zion!”(H)

How can we sing the songs of the Lord(I)
    while in a foreign land?
If I forget you,(J) Jerusalem,
    may my right hand forget its skill.
May my tongue cling to the roof(K) of my mouth
    if I do not remember(L) you,
if I do not consider Jerusalem(M)
    my highest joy.

Remember, Lord, what the Edomites(N) did
    on the day Jerusalem fell.(O)
“Tear it down,” they cried,
    “tear it down to its foundations!”(P)
Daughter Babylon, doomed to destruction,(Q)
    happy is the one who repays you
    according to what you have done to us.
Happy is the one who seizes your infants
    and dashes them(R) against the rocks.

Lamentations 2:13-22

13 What can I say for you?(A)
    With what can I compare you,
    Daughter(B) Jerusalem?
To what can I liken you,
    that I may comfort you,
    Virgin Daughter Zion?(C)
Your wound is as deep as the sea.(D)
    Who can heal you?

14 The visions of your prophets
    were false(E) and worthless;
they did not expose your sin
    to ward off your captivity.(F)
The prophecies they gave you
    were false and misleading.(G)

15 All who pass your way
    clap their hands at you;(H)
they scoff(I) and shake their heads(J)
    at Daughter Jerusalem:(K)
“Is this the city that was called
    the perfection of beauty,(L)
    the joy of the whole earth?”(M)

16 All your enemies open their mouths
    wide against you;(N)
they scoff and gnash their teeth(O)
    and say, “We have swallowed her up.(P)
This is the day we have waited for;
    we have lived to see it.”(Q)

17 The Lord has done what he planned;
    he has fulfilled(R) his word,
    which he decreed long ago.(S)
He has overthrown you without pity,(T)
    he has let the enemy gloat over you,(U)
    he has exalted the horn[a] of your foes.(V)

18 The hearts of the people
    cry out to the Lord.(W)
You walls of Daughter Zion,(X)
    let your tears(Y) flow like a river
    day and night;(Z)
give yourself no relief,
    your eyes no rest.(AA)

19 Arise, cry out in the night,
    as the watches of the night begin;
pour out your heart(AB) like water
    in the presence of the Lord.(AC)
Lift up your hands(AD) to him
    for the lives of your children,
who faint(AE) from hunger
    at every street corner.

20 “Look, Lord, and consider:
    Whom have you ever treated like this?
Should women eat their offspring,(AF)
    the children they have cared for?(AG)
Should priest and prophet be killed(AH)
    in the sanctuary of the Lord?(AI)

21 “Young and old lie together
    in the dust of the streets;
my young men and young women
    have fallen by the sword.(AJ)
You have slain them in the day of your anger;
    you have slaughtered them without pity.(AK)

22 “As you summon to a feast day,
    so you summoned against me terrors(AL) on every side.
In the day of the Lord’s anger
    no one escaped(AM) or survived;
those I cared for and reared(AN)
    my enemy has destroyed.”

1 John 5:1-5

Faith in the Incarnate Son of God

Everyone who believes(A) that Jesus is the Christ(B) is born of God,(C) and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well.(D) This is how we know(E) that we love the children of God:(F) by loving God and carrying out his commands. In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands.(G) And his commands are not burdensome,(H) for everyone born of God(I) overcomes(J) the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.(K)

1 John 5:13-21

Concluding Affirmations

13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God(A) so that you may know that you have eternal life.(B) 14 This is the confidence(C) we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.(D) 15 And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know(E) that we have what we asked of him.(F)

16 If you see any brother or sister commit a sin that does not lead to death, you should pray and God will give them life.(G) I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death.(H) I am not saying that you should pray about that.(I) 17 All wrongdoing is sin,(J) and there is sin that does not lead to death.(K)

18 We know that anyone born of God(L) does not continue to sin; the One who was born of God keeps them safe, and the evil one(M) cannot harm them.(N) 19 We know that we are children of God,(O) and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one.(P) 20 We know also that the Son of God has come(Q) and has given us understanding,(R) so that we may know him who is true.(S) And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.(T)

21 Dear children,(U) keep yourselves from idols.(V)
