Therefore we have been (A)buried with Him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was (B)raised from the dead through the (C)glory of the Father, so we too may walk in (D)newness of life. For (E)if we have become [a]united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be [b]in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our (F)old [c]self was (G)crucified with Him, in order that our (H)body of sin might be [d]done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; for (I)the one who has died is [e]freed from sin.

Now (J)if we have died with Christ, we believe that (K)we shall also live with Him, knowing that Christ, having been (L)raised from the dead, [f]is never to die again; (M)death no longer is master over Him. 10 For [g]the death that He died, He died to sin once for all time; but [h]the life that He lives, He lives to [i]God. 11 So you too, consider yourselves to be (N)dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

12 Therefore sin is not to (O)reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts, 13 and do not go on (P)presenting [j]the parts of your body to sin as [k]instruments of unrighteousness; but (Q)present yourselves to God as those who are alive from the dead, and [l]your body’s parts as [m]instruments of righteousness for God. 14 For (R)sin shall not (S)be master over you, for (T)you are not under [n]the Law but (U)under grace.

15 What then? (V)Are we to sin because we are not under [o]the Law but under grace? [p](W)Far from it! 16 Do you not (X)know that the one to whom you present yourselves as (Y)slaves for obedience, you are slaves of that same one whom you obey, either of (Z)sin [q]resulting in death, or of obedience [r]resulting in righteousness? 17 But (AA)thanks be to God that [s]though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that [t](AB)form of teaching to which you were entrusted, 18 and after being (AC)freed from sin, you became slaves to righteousness. 19 (AD)I am speaking [u]in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just (AE)as you presented [v]the parts of your body as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness, [w]resulting in further lawlessness, so now present [x]your body’s parts as slaves to righteousness, [y]resulting in sanctification.

20 For (AF)when you were slaves of sin, you were free in relation to righteousness. 21 Therefore what [z](AG)benefit were you then [aa]deriving from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the outcome of those things is (AH)death. 22 But now having been (AI)freed from sin and (AJ)enslaved to God, you [ab]derive your [ac](AK)benefit, [ad]resulting in sanctification, and (AL)the outcome, eternal life. 23 For the wages of (AM)sin is death, but the gracious gift of God is (AN)eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death(A) in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead(B) through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.(C)

For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his.(D) For we know that our old self(E) was crucified with him(F) so that the body ruled by sin(G) might be done away with,[a] that we should no longer be slaves to sin(H) because anyone who has died has been set free from sin.(I)

Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.(J) For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead,(K) he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him.(L) 10 The death he died, he died to sin(M) once for all;(N) but the life he lives, he lives to God.

11 In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin(O) but alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12 Therefore do not let sin reign(P) in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. 13 Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness,(Q) but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness.(R) 14 For sin shall no longer be your master,(S) because you are not under the law,(T) but under grace.(U)

Slaves to Righteousness

15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace?(V) By no means! 16 Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey(W)—whether you are slaves to sin,(X) which leads to death,(Y) or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? 17 But thanks be to God(Z) that, though you used to be slaves to sin,(AA) you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching(AB) that has now claimed your allegiance. 18 You have been set free from sin(AC) and have become slaves to righteousness.(AD)

19 I am using an example from everyday life(AE) because of your human limitations. Just as you used to offer yourselves as slaves to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer yourselves as slaves to righteousness(AF) leading to holiness. 20 When you were slaves to sin,(AG) you were free from the control of righteousness.(AH) 21 What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death!(AI) 22 But now that you have been set free from sin(AJ) and have become slaves of God,(AK) the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life.(AL) 23 For the wages of sin is death,(AM) but the gift of God is eternal life(AN) in[b] Christ Jesus our Lord.
