First, (A)I thank my God through Jesus Christ [a]for you all, because (B)your faith is being proclaimed throughout the world. For (C)God, whom I (D)serve in my spirit in the preaching of the gospel of His Son, is my witness as to how unceasingly (E)I make mention of you, 10 always in my prayers requesting if perhaps now, at last by (F)the will of God, I will succeed in coming to you. 11 For (G)I long to see you so that I may impart some spiritual gift to you, that you may be [b]established; 12 that is, that I may be encouraged together with you while among you, each of us by the other’s faith, both yours and mine. 13 (H)I do not want you to be unaware, (I)brothers and sisters, that often I (J)have planned to come to you (and have been prevented so far) so that I may obtain some (K)fruit among you also just as among the rest of the Gentiles. 14 (L)I am [c]under obligation both to Greeks and to the [d](M)uncultured, both to the wise and to the foolish. 15 So, for my part, I am eager to (N)preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome.

16 For I am not (O)ashamed of the gospel, for (P)it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the (Q)Jew first and also to (R)the Greek. 17 For in it (S)the righteousness of God is revealed [e]from faith to faith; as it is written: “[f](T)But the righteous one will live by faith.”

Unbelief and Its Consequences

18 For (U)the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of people who (V)suppress the truth [g]in unrighteousness, 19 because (W)that which is known about God is evident [h]within them; for God made it evident to them. 20 For (X)since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, that is, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, (Y)being understood by what has been made, so that they are without excuse. 21 For even though they knew God, they did not [i]honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became (Z)futile in their reasonings, and their senseless hearts were darkened. 22 (AA)Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and they (AB)exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible mankind, of birds, four-footed animals, and [j]crawling creatures.

24 Therefore (AC)God gave them up to vile impurity in the lusts of their hearts, so that their bodies would be (AD)dishonored among them. 25 For they exchanged the truth of God for [k](AE)falsehood, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, (AF)who is blessed [l]forever. Amen.

26 For this reason (AG)God gave them over to (AH)degrading passions; for their women exchanged natural relations for that which is contrary to nature, 27 and likewise the men, too, abandoned natural relations [m]with women and burned in their desire toward one another, (AI)males with males committing [n]shameful acts and receiving in [o]their own persons the due penalty of their error.

28 And just as they did not see fit [p]to acknowledge God, (AJ)God gave them up to a depraved mind, to do those things that are not proper, 29 people having been filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, and evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, and malice; they are (AK)gossips, 30 slanderers, [q](AL)haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, (AM)disobedient to parents, 31 without understanding, untrustworthy, (AN)unfeeling, and unmerciful; 32 and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of (AO)death, they not only do the same, but also (AP)approve of those who practice them.

Paul’s Longing to Visit Rome

First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you,(A) because your faith is being reported all over the world.(B) God, whom I serve(C) in my spirit in preaching the gospel of his Son, is my witness(D) how constantly I remember you 10 in my prayers at all times;(E) and I pray that now at last by God’s will(F) the way may be opened for me to come to you.(G)

11 I long to see you(H) so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift(I) to make you strong— 12 that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith. 13 I do not want you to be unaware,(J) brothers and sisters,[a](K) that I planned many times to come to you (but have been prevented from doing so until now)(L) in order that I might have a harvest among you, just as I have had among the other Gentiles.

14 I am obligated(M) both to Greeks and non-Greeks, both to the wise and the foolish. 15 That is why I am so eager to preach the gospel also to you who are in Rome.(N)

16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel,(O) because it is the power of God(P) that brings salvation to everyone who believes:(Q) first to the Jew,(R) then to the Gentile.(S) 17 For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed(T)—a righteousness that is by faith(U) from first to last,[b] just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.”[c](V)

God’s Wrath Against Sinful Humanity

18 The wrath of God(W) is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them.(X) 20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made,(Y) so that people are without excuse.(Z)

21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.(AA) 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools(AB) 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images(AC) made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles.

24 Therefore God gave them over(AD) in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another.(AE) 25 They exchanged the truth about God for a lie,(AF) and worshiped and served created things(AG) rather than the Creator—who is forever praised.(AH) Amen.(AI)

26 Because of this, God gave them over(AJ) to shameful lusts.(AK) Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones.(AL) 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.(AM)

28 Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over(AN) to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. 29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips,(AO) 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents;(AP) 31 they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love,(AQ) no mercy. 32 Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death,(AR) they not only continue to do these very things but also approve(AS) of those who practice them.
