19 And they threw dust on their heads as they wept and grieved, exclaiming, Woe and alas, for the great city, where all who had ships on the sea grew rich [through her extravagance] from her great wealth! In one single hour she has been destroyed and has become a desert!(A)

20 Rejoice (celebrate) over her, O heaven! O saints (people of God) and apostles and prophets, because God has executed vengeance for you upon her!(B)

21 Then a single powerful angel took up a boulder like a great millstone and flung it into the sea, crying, With such violence shall Babylon the great city be hurled down to destruction and shall never again be found.(C)

“‘Woe! Woe to you, great city,(C)
    where all who had ships on the sea
    became rich through her wealth!
In one hour she has been brought to ruin!’(D)

20 “Rejoice over her, you heavens!(E)
    Rejoice, you people of God!
    Rejoice, apostles and prophets!
For God has judged her
    with the judgment she imposed on you.”(F)

The Finality of Babylon’s Doom

21 Then a mighty angel(G) picked up a boulder the size of a large millstone and threw it into the sea,(H) and said:

“With such violence
    the great city(I) of Babylon will be thrown down,
    never to be found again.
