⁷ or, “Who will go down into the abyss?”^(A)[a] that is, to bring Christ up from the dead.^(B)

The Fifth Trumpet

9 The fifth angel blew his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from heaven to earth.^(A) The key to the shaft of the abyss^(B) was given to him. ² He opened the shaft of the abyss, and smoke came up out of the shaft like smoke from a great^[a] furnace so that the sun and the air were darkened by the smoke from the shaft.

¹¹ They had as their king^[a] the angel of the abyss; his name in Hebrew is Abaddon,^[b] and in Greek he has the name Apollyon.^[c]

The Witnesses Martyred

⁷ When they finish their testimony, the beast^[a](A) that comes up out of the abyss will make war with them, conquer them, and kill them.

⁸ The beast that you saw was, and is not, and is about to come up from the abyss^(A) and go to destruction.^(B) Those who live on the earth whose names have not been written in the book of life from the foundation of the world^(C) will be astonished when they see the beast that was, and is not, and will be present again.^(D)

Satan Bound

20 Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven with the key to the abyss^(A) and a great chain in his hand.

³ He threw him into the abyss, closed it, and put a seal on it^(A) so that he would no longer deceive the nations^(B) until the 1,000 years were completed. After that, he must be released for a short time.
