³³ Your children will be shepherds here for forty years,^(A) suffering for your unfaithfulness, until the last of your bodies lies in the wilderness.

³ In the fortieth year,^(A) on the first day of the eleventh month,^(B) Moses proclaimed^(C) to the Israelites all that the Lord had commanded him concerning them.

⁷ The Lord your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands. He has watched^(A) over your journey through this vast wilderness.^(B) These forty years^(C) the Lord your God has been with you, and you have not lacked anything.^(D)

² Remember how the Lord your God led^(A) you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test^(B) you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands. ³ He humbled^(C) you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna,^(D) which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach^(E) you that man does not live on bread^(F) alone but on every word that comes from the mouth^(G) of the Lord.^{(H) 4} Your clothes did not wear out and your feet did not swell during these forty years.^(I)

⁶ The Israelites had moved about in the wilderness^(A) forty years^(B) until all the men who were of military age when they left Egypt had died, since they had not obeyed the Lord. For the Lord had sworn to them that they would not see the land he had solemnly promised their ancestors to give us,^(C) a land flowing with milk and honey.^(D)

¹¹ So the land had peace^(A) for forty years,^(B) until Othniel son of Kenaz^(C) died.
