^20 (A)The chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas but to destroy Jesus.

^22 [a]Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Jesus called Messiah?” They all said, “Let him be crucified!” ²³ But he said, “Why? What evil has he done?” They only shouted the louder, “Let him be crucified!”

^13 [a]They shouted again, “Crucify him.” ¹⁴ Pilate said to them, “Why? What evil has he done?” They only shouted the louder, “Crucify him.”

⁴ Pilate then addressed the chief priests and the crowds, “I find this man not guilty.”

¹⁴ and said to them, “You brought this man to me and accused him of inciting the people to revolt. I have conducted my investigation in your presence and have not found this man guilty of the charges you have brought against him,^{(A) 15} nor did Herod, for he sent him back to us. So no capital crime has been committed by him.

²¹ but they continued their shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!” ²² Pilate addressed them a third time, “What evil has this man done? I found him guilty of no capital crime. Therefore I shall have him flogged and then release him.” ²³ With loud shouts, however, they persisted in calling for his crucifixion, and their voices prevailed.

⁴ Once more Pilate went out and said to them, “Look, I am bringing him out to you, so that you may know that I find no guilt in him.”^{(A) 5} So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple cloak. And he said to them, “Behold, the man!”^{(B) 6} When the chief priests and the guards saw him they cried out, “Crucify him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and crucify him. I find no guilt in him.”^(C)

¹⁵ They cried out, “Take him away, take him away! Crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your king?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.”
